ABOUT PLANTS
Nephrolepis exaltata 'Bostoniensis'
Common name - Boston Fern
When you think Fern you think of this one, it is the most common of all ferns. The fronds form a thick mound, which in some cases could get as long as 4 feet. The fronds will wither and die if the
plant does not receive enough light. Most people think ferns like to grow in shade but they actually like bright light. Fronds might turn brown in the winter time if their is not enough humidity in the
air. Misting with water may be needed. Keep the plant evenly moist, but not soaking wet. During the winter, only water when it feels dry to the touch. Fertilize monthly during the growing summer
months.
Spathiphyllum
Common name - Peace Lily
Spathiphyllums live well in low light conditions and are known for thriving in shade areas of the humid tropical rainforest. Spathiphyllums will need plenty of water, keep the soil moist but not sitting
in water. They will let you know when they need water, the foliage will start to droop when it gets dry. The foliage will come back fairly fast after being watered should drooping happen. The Plant
would prefer 70-75 degree temperatures in the daytime and 65-70 degree temperatures in the night.
Aglaonema commutatum
Common name - Chinese Evergreen
One of the favorite things about Chinese Evergreens is that they seem to thrive on neglect. It will tolerate dark conditions, which will make this a good selection for a coffee table away from a
window. This plant is not picky over its water requirements. Allow it to become dry before watering.
Scindapsus aureus
Common name - Golden Pothos
This plant is so similar to the philodendron, that some people call it a verigated philodendron. This is one of the most popular house plants because it can be grown so easily in the home. The
more light that is available for this plant, the more veriegation shows on the leaves. Allow it to become nearly dry before watering. If you want the plant to branch out all you have to do is pinch just
above a leaf.
Euphorbia pulcherrima
Common name - Poinsettia
Keep soil fairly damp to the touch all the time and it's usually good to water up to twice a week depending on room temprature and the amount of light in the room.
Poinsettias will do their best by windows with lots of indirect sunlight. Poinsettias like rooms where tempratures are above 65 degrees, and keep away from drafty
cool areas. Poinsettias should last in bloom (the blooms are acutally colored leaves and not the flowers) for up to 6 weeks if cared for properly. If you want to keep
your plant after they colored leaves have died off, simply cut back the stems about half way down the branches to where the new growth is coming out and leave in
a sunny window all through the rest of the winter and then outside if you would like in the spring and summer. You will be rewarded with a beautiful green leaved
plant. Getting it to bloom again for the winter season will require some extra work in the fall. POINSETTIA’S are not poisonous (see this article).
